Senior Scientist, Lead Discovery (Cell Biology)

Cambridge, MA
August 10, 2020

The Role

The Scientist II/Senior Scientist, Lead Discovery, will develop, implement, and execute appropriate cellular-based assays in support of drug discovery projects. The ideal candidate will utilize a diverse set of cellular immunology, biochemical, and metabolic techniques to profile small molecule chemical matter in support of lead projects.  The ability to work closely with contract resource organizations (CROs) to oversee experiments, analyze data, and report results will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively work in a matrixed organization while parallel processing several key activities simultaneously
  • Design and optimize cellular assays to evaluate small molecule inhibitors in support of drug discovery projects
  • Deliver results in a virtual environment until COVID-19 work from home restrictions are lifted
  • Generate and maintain relevant cell lines for compound profiling and screening
  • Demonstrate target engagement of prioritized compounds in a cellular environment
  • Develop novel assays for biomarker identification
  • Manage CROs and oversee all aspects of the relationship
  • Generate SOP documents
  • Manage uploading of data to internal database
  • Work cross-functionally by communicating experimental results and conclusions within the Lead Discovery and Biology groups

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology (or Biochemistry) with 4 – 10 years industrial, drug discovery experience or a M.S./B.S. with 10+ years of experience
  • Experience in generating cellular reagents in support of cell-based activity assays
  • Experience in generating cell-based assays to enable lead optimization of small molecule inhibitors
  • Experience establishing cellular high-throughput and phenotypic screening assays in collaboration with CROs
  • Experience in designing and implementing cell-based assays at CROs
  • Experience in immunology or metabolism is a plus
  • Biochemical assay experience (mechanistic enzymology/high-throughput screening) is considered an advantage
  • Knowledge of the drug discovery process, with the ability to design, plan, and troubleshoot difficult problems in target engagement and biomarker assays
  • Can-do attitude and team player with strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional matrix-based organization
  • Verbal and written communication skills and ability to parallel path multiple projects simultaneously
