The Role

The Director of Informatics will lead our research informatics initiatives facilitating the connection between technology and our science by designing and implementing our informatics architecture. The Director of Informatics will have a long-term vision and will manage infrastructure and resources to meet organizational needs.  They will work cross functionally and partner closely with scientists to identify scalable and practical solutions for technology needs from Target Discovery through Clinical Development. This individual will have one direct report initially and oversee multiple consultants across various specialties.

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead the informatics group that develops and maintains informatics systems across the company
  • Collaborate with computational and experimental scientists, software engineers, and business employees to deploy, support, and provide appropriate insight, data management, and reporting solutions
  • Integrate multiple varying data sets using home grown or purchased software that enable scientists to make discoveries and gain insights into their data
  •  Identify appropriate commercial systems or develop custom applications to support research, preclinical and clinical development
  • Strive to continuously improve our informatics platform by identifying unmet needs and implementing creative solutions with buy-in from users
  • Develop and promote best practices for scientific data capture, integration, and analysis
  • Serve as a champion for data management, governance, quality and vendor relationships across Rheos
  • Lead cross-functional data governance team to ensure proper usage of the Company’s data
  • Grow the informatics department expertise to meet short and long-term corporate objectives, while managing and mentoring the Informatics teams
  • Deploy and scale bioinformatics pipelines for processing and managing multi-omics datasets
  • Provide strong leadership and business acumen to inspire Rheos around common goals, vision, and values for informatics

Requirements

  • BS, MS or PhD in Computational Sciences (computer science, applied math/statistics, computational chemistry, bio/cheminformatics) or scientific field (chemistry, biology, biophysics) partnered with informatics experience
  • 10-15 years’ relevant work experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience leading and partnering with cross-functional teams to deliver meaningful solutions
  • Deep understanding of the commercial scientific applications used for small molecule drug discovery and analytics, such as solutions from Genedata, Sapio, Arxspan, Biobright and Smartsheet
  • Experience building, deploying, and supporting drug discovery data systems and query tools
  • Prior experience successfully supporting and leveraging outsourcing strategies
  • Strong working knowledge of modern web development, scientific computing, software development, cloud infrastructure, and databases
  • Ability to execute and automate standard scientific and statistical analyses using tools/languages including Python, R, SQL, Java, Linux, etc.
  • Experience in scientific software administration and tool development including compound registration, assay results management systems, electronic laboratory notebooks, laboratory information management systems, and custom web apps
  • Knowledge of cloud computing, AWS, Azure and Google
  • Experience managing internal employees and multiple external consultant
  • Excellent communication skills and a drive to work with people from diverse scientific and non-scientific backgrounds
  • Highly organized thinker, problem-solver and enthusiastic collaborator.
  • Able to multi-task and seamlessly prioritize multiple projects across various departments
  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to identify and implement creative solutions
  • Familiar with industry trends and current scientific thinking
  • Leadership skills and ability to transition between business and science topics
  • Comfortable partnering with both bench scientists and senior executives
