The Role

Rheos is seeking a Lab Manager to maintain and expand our biology lab including lab supply inventory, procurement, equipment maintenance and safety within our highly collaborative environment.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the maintenance expansion/relocation of a biology lab including maintaining an environment of collaboration and creativity that is fundamental to our culture. 
  • Think critically to resolve unique issues revolving around a shared work environment
  • Oversee the maintenance of laboratory supplies, equipment (including laboratory computers), instruments, and service contracts; restock laboratory supplies on an ongoing basis 
  • Manage and oversee the maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment, including daily upkeep, routine quality control, troubleshooting, and scheduling of preventative maintenance (i.e.: Fortessa, Guava and tissue culture related equipment)
  • Develop standard operating procedures for the start-up and shutdown of shared equipment 
  • Think critically to resolve unique issues and create standard operating procedures related to shared work environment, equipment usage metrics and calendars 
  • Establishing and overseeing freezer and inventory management protocols including those necessary to maintain clinical biological specimens (i.e.: cells/tissues, supernatants, compounds, Cytokines, Antibodies and other shared reagents) 
  • Coordinating sample shipment to CROs and data receipt 
  • Managing the logistics and processing of biological specimens (leukopaks, blood and blood products, tissue samples) 
  • Lead management of alarm systems, including restoration, resets, and routine checks 
  • Develop optimal, cost-effective solutions for use of lab reagents and operation of equipment 
  • Manage procurement (including negotiation), shipping, and receiving 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with vendor representatives 
  • Work closely with business and operations team to drive contracts to resolution and execution 
  • Manage and oversee the inventory management control program 
  • Ensure safe and efficient laboratory operations 
  • Manage chemical inventories and work with EHS consultants to manage liquid and solid waste pickup and storage of chemical and biohazard waste 
  • Routinely inspect lab safety equipment 
  • Liaise with building facilities manager and safety consultant 
  • Act as data compliance steward to ensure ongoing electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) compliance. 

Requirements and Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in a science related discipline

Required Experience:

  • 5-8 years of lab operations/management; ideally in industry. Bench experience is strongly desired.
  • Extensive experience with the following: Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), clinical specimen sample handling, Laboratory 

Information Management Systems (LIMS) 

  • Proven track record to successfully articulate results and accomplishments 
  • Track record of successful relationship management
  • Experience successfully managing a startup laboratory 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Outstanding operational skills with the ability to prioritize based on overall program and portfolio needs 
  • Get it done attitude with the ability to critically and creatively solve operational hurdles 
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint), proficiency with database systems
  • Effectively operate within a matrixed organization 
  • Strong communication, collaboration, problem solving, and negotiation skills
