Scientist / Senior Scientist, Metabolomics

Cambridge, MA
November 25, 2019

The Role:

Rheos is seeking an exceptional scientist to join the Cellular Metabolism team. The successful candidate will be an expert in cellular metabolism and associated analytical approaches, will be firmly grounded in disease-related biology research, and has experience in a drug discovery environment.  To be successful, continuous cross-functional collaboration with Discovery Biology and other departments will be essential.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the target selection process through experimentation to gather metabolic data and by providing a metabolic mechanism-driven context to support target validation.
  • Represent Cellular Metabolism in drug discovery teams: (I) Aid in developing team strategy, goals and timelines, (II) contribute to the design and execution of experiments that elucidate mechanistic links between target engagement and immune function, and (III) identify metabolite biomarkers and develop analytical (LC-MS) methods for their analysis.
  • Actively engage in cross-functional teamwork with Discovery Biology and other departments to optimally design and execute experiments, and to help identify new research opportunities.
  • Where necessary develop and employ novel analytical approaches to address scientific questions. Examples of such activities include the optimization of sample preparation approaches, and/or the development of novel tracing modalities (in vitro or in vivo).
  • Analyze, compile, and communicate the results of studies on a regular basis in relevant settings such as team meetings.
  • External communication in the form of publications and presentations at scientific conferences and meetings is expected.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Cell Biology, Chemical Biology or a closely related field, such as Chemical Engineering.

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of 2-6 years postdoctoral or preferably industry experience beyond PhD
  • Experience with sample preparation approaches and mass spec operation as it relates to metabolomics, lipidomics, and associated data analysis
  • Mass spec data processing, analysis, and organizational capabilities are central to the position; beyond operation of commercial mass spec software, this will include extensive use of Microsoft Excel, Spotfire, as well as in-house proprietary software packages
  • Experience with cell culture methods and stable isotope tracing is highly desirable

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Desire to function successfully in a cross functional, matrix-based research organization
  • Desirable skill sets include familiarity with various mass spec software packages and analytic techniques with QToF and Q-Exactive instrumentation
  • Ability to develop and implement new SOPs for the analysis of specific sets of metabolites and their metabolism
  • Strong knowledge of central metabolism, and/or immunology and signaling are critical for this position
