Senior Scientist, Metabolomics

Cambridge, MA
March 08, 2019

Rheos Medicines is a biopharmaceutical company discovering and developing novel medicines that target immune cell metabolism to treat patients with a broad range of severe diseases, including those with autoimmune disease and cancer. We are rapidly advancing a first-infield approach in immunometabolism by applying a comprehensive, systems-biology understanding of the metabolic pathways that drive immune cell function. Launched in 2018 by Third Rock Ventures, Rheos is built on groundbreaking science and currently has a team of more than 30 employees advancing our pipeline of immunometabolism drugs.

The Role:

Rheos is seeking an exceptional scientist who can comfortably operate at the interface between technology and biology. The successful candidate will have the opportunity play a central, hands-on role in the development and execution of mass spec-based metabolic analyses of primary human immune cells, patient isolates, and samples obtained from in vivo models.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop and use novel methodologies at the interface of technology and biology. Activities may include optimization of sample prep strategies, implementation of emerging technologies like imaging MS, and/or in vivo tracing studies.
  • Analyze, compile, and communicate the results of studies on a regular basis in project team meetings.
  • Productively communicate the value of new methods and results within the company, interact with peers in the cellular metabolism group, and as a collaborator with both immunology and drug discovery teams.
  • External communication at scientific conferences and meetings is expected.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Cell Biology, Chemical Biology or a closely related field, such as Chemical Engineering.

Required Experience:

  • A PhD and a minimum of 5-8 years postdoc or preferably industry experience
  • Strong track record in the development of novel, technologically advanced methodologies and assays, and their implementation to gain new biological insights
  • Experience in mass spec instrumentation as it relates to metabolomics, lipidomics, and associated data analysis
  • Experience with cell culture methods and stable isotope tracing is desirable
  • Mass spec data processing, analysis, and organizational capabilities are central to the position; beyond operation of commercial mass spec software, this will include extensive use of Microsoft Excel, as well as in-house proprietary software packages

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Ability to function successfully in a cross functional, matrix-based research organization
  • Desirable skill-sets include familiarity with various mass spec software packages and analytic techniques with QToF and Q-Exactive instrumentation
  • Strong knowledge of central metabolism, and/or immunology and signaling are valuable assets for this position
